Subject: [T-Craft] Garmin 430 ground school

The first ground school of the new year will be on a new piece of equipment that will soon be installed in Cessna 686. The Garmin GNS 430 is a panel-mounted GPS with a built-in communication and navigation radio.

The class will be held on Wednesday January 18th, 7pm at the EAA/CAP hangar.

Whether or not you can attend the class, I recommend that everyone spend some time learning about this sophisticated piece of avionics equipment. Garmin has lots of good information on this unit on their website and you should download these three items.

1) The 430 Pilot's Guide (3.67 MB PDF):  http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GNS430_PilotsGuide.pdf

2) The 430 Quick Reference Guide (774 KB PDF): http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GNS430_QuickReferenceGuide.pdf

3) Most importantly, the excellent 430 simulator lets you actually practice using the unit on your Windows computer. It's a large download, but well worth the time spent getting the file (13.2 MB EXE): http://www.garmin.com/software/simulators/TRAIN430.EXE.

During the class I'll cover basic operation of the 430, using the communication and navigation radios, and VFR navigation. In the interest of time, I will not cover using the GPS for IFR approaches during this introductory class. If there's sufficient interest in IFR use of this GPS, I can cover that in a future ground school.
